Michelle Duggar

Michelle Duggar did a wonderful job speaking at MOPS today. She talked about building Godly character in your children. It's truly one of the most important things a mom can do!
Five of the oldest Duggar girls played their violins for us. Beautiful music.

Their camera crew was there, and somehow Shannon and I ended up sitting on the front row. We may be on tv if today even makes their show! Ha. I had Colson with me so I was crossing my fingers he would do well. I did not want to make a scene. Thankfully he was a perfect baby right up until the end. Good boy! Big sigh of relief.
Michelle, me & Colson

We had a few minutes to ask her questions, and I really wanted to ask how you get a newborn to sleep. Since she has nineteen kids she has to be sleeping to keep up with them, right?! I didn't get a chance though.
Oh well. ; )

Five hours of sleep each night are killing me. I think it's time to break out the rice cereal.

It is good to praise the LORD...
O Most High, to proclaim Your love in the morning
and Your faithfulness at night...

Psalm 92:1-2

You go girl. You bust out that rice cereal. I won't judge. If I could ask Michelle Duggar anything, it would be how in the world she's always so sunshine-y happy. I mean, I've got the joy of the Lord and all, but I'm a far cry from her level of cheerfulness!

ha ha - that verse should read "...and His faithfulness ALL through the night!" shouldn't it? hang in there - you can do this - it's really such a short short time in the whole scheme of things! And the Duggars?? What fun! Hopefully was a nice break and pick-me-up in your week. Love you and, as always, praying for you :)

I love the Duggars! How cool that you got to hear her talk! She and her husband seem like such wonderful Godly people and all the kids seem so sweet. A lot of people I know ridicule them for having so many children but I think it's great! She is an inspiration for me to be a better mom.

You are an inspiration, too! You seem like such a sweet, Godly woman as well!

It really will get better. The first week I went back to work, Ava didn't want to go to sleep until 11 or 12. I felt like a zombie. Things are much better now. It just might take a few more weeks. :)

That's so cool that you got to meet the Duggars. I think they are amazing people and a great family. I was especially awed at how at peace she was with the last little one being so premature and. They are truly a godly family.
Crossing my fingers for sleep for you. Colson really is still young and five hours isn't terrible (I know that's probably not what you want to hear!) You can try feeding him a little more often during the day. The cereal may help too.

Only 5 hours of sleep? Well, it doesn't show. You look awesome Katie!

It won't always be like this. I can remember having to tell myself that during those early weeks/months when I couldn't see past the sleep deprivation. A time will come when you will both sleep again.

Now, you can tell me the same thing in a couple of months when I'm going through it again! :)

I love this family...they represent everything opposite of what our society deems as right...and I love that they stand firm on their beliefs. Is she as soft spoken and gentle in person as she is on TV? Maybe when I grow up I can be like her:)haha! Neat that you got to meet her!!!

I am so totally jealous! I LOVE the Duggars. I actually asked my husband if we could drive down from North Carolina to go to the MOPS meeting after you posted about it. He, obviously saner than me, said no. So cool you got to meet her and have your picture taken with her though!

Both of my kids slept at least 8 hours by 8 weeks. I followed the principles of Baby Wise. I know it has had a lot of bad publicity and I am certainly not at all interested in starting a debate about it. Simply put, it worked for us. I suffered from postpartum depression and sleep was vital to my well-being. After each feeding, my kids stayed awake for a little while, and then napped. I did not allow them to sleep right after eating. I also didn't let them go longer than 2.5-3 hours between feedings during the day as newborns until they were sleeping all night.

I just had my 4th baby on July 8th and we have used Babywise with all of them. Its not too late to start following the schedule to get him to sleep all night. I just fe my little girl at 9:30 and she will sleep until 6:45 or so tomorrow morning. If you have never heard of it, get it and read it. Use what you like and disregard everything else. The overall schedule is this. During the day you feed your baby every 3-3 1/2 hours. From the beginning of one feeding is when you time it, and I nurse 100% don't supplement and don't introduce rice cereal until 4 months or so. Anyway, if your baby is sleeping and it has been 3 to 3 1/2 hours you wake them up to feed them, until 11pm at night. Then after the feeding is play time/awake time, and then down to sleep until the next feeding. After 11pm you let them wake up on their own to eat. The first nine weeks is the stability period. This helps stabalize their metabolism and allows them to go longer at night.
My daughter is normally awake for about an hour and a half from the start of her feeding, and then I lay her down and she sleeps until her next feeding and wakes up on her own.
Some people think Babywise is the devil, but I highly recommend it. It has worked with all 4 of our kids. Avery is 2 months old as of yesterday and has been going 5-6 hours between feedings at night after 11, around 3 weeks old and now goes 10-11 hours in between feedings. The body is an amazing thing and your breastmilk will adjust to how you feed. Your library might have a copy of it, but if not you can get it at Amazon. I know a pediatrician who is a friend who wrote a blog all about using Babywise with his first child. http://www.smartparentshealthykids.com/blog/?p=1698

Glad you got to meet Michelle, they are a sincere and "real" family, they are dear friends and we have fellowshiped and stayed with them in their home and church. She does have lots of wisdom and I am blessed with her calm heart!

We read an older version of the baby wise book and set out to do the plan suggested in the book. I did play with the schedule a bit and came up with what suited our family and still got a sleeper. Anna was 10 months old and NOT sleeping....very sad. So for three nights she cried falling asleep but after that she slept all night. But with one newer if you could get him to sleep 6-7 hours that would be optimal :) Upon waking, (I would let them sleep til they woke up) then change diaper, feed, burp and make sure they are tanked up, let them have play time for bout two hours or so (or less) then LAY them down for the nap time. I did this routine throughout the day and after last feeding for evening say around 10pm, I would feed and lay down and hope to get 6-8 hours of sleep! But always remember its just a season, and you will live through sleepless nights :)

My daughter just lost a child and I am searching for a picture like the one you received of Jesus holding a child. Do you know the name or artist of this particular picture?
I would appreciate your help.

What an amazing day you had Katie! Michelle Duggar is such an inspriation to me. I wish I had some sleeping advice for you, however, my baby didn't completely sleep through the night until 7-8 months. It was a rought time but we finally got through it. It sounds like your little guy is probably hungry, especially since he is such a big boy. I don't see any harm in busting out the rice cereal. I know this happened to my neighbors because they had such a hungry little boy on thier hands that their pediatrician told them to start putting rice cereal in his bottle. I won't judge, I am sure it's fine. I would call your pediatrician and ask if that would make you feel better about it. I loved reading all of the suggestions, perhaps I will try Babywise for the next baby!
