Hard to share this story. What happened last night would not have been funny at all without these three things:
1. Jason was out of town.
2. It was after midnight.
3. I am not supposed to be picking up anything over 20 lbs.
We found out the hard way that one of our fire alarms needed a new battery. It started it's little beeping noise every 20 seconds about 12:30 am. It woke my mom and me up, and we just hoped that it wouldn't bother Zach. My mom had been up with Zach since 5 am yesterday morning, so I knew we had to fix this thing!
Half asleep and delirious, I called Jason and he was actually a big help. The main problem was that the alarm beeping was in the study in the highest part of the room. I'm thinking, "HOW in the heck are we going to get up there?!" I really thought we were just going to be up all night listening to the beep...beep...beep. I just prayed that Jesus would help us!
After Jason explained what to do with the battery, he told me to get the ladder out of the garage. So my mom and I stumbled into the garage. Now I'm wondering how my mom is going to haul this huge painting ladder BY HERSELF through our house all the way to the study to fix the battery. There's just no way.
So I took the lightest part that I could and we both maneuvered the ladder through the house into the study. It was a miracle we did this without breaking anything or waking up Zach. We make it the study only to discover that Jason's desk needed to be moved about one inch for the ladder to fit. Good grief.
We moved the desk, changed the battery, and finally went back to bed at 1:15 am. My back did hurt this morning though. Not good, but what choice did I have!?
Jason is still very impressed by the both of us. It's great!
These pictures do not do us justice. Notice the little circle in the top of the picture!? That's the alarm.
This story cracked me up and I know this is going to sound crazy, but our smoke alarm ALSO started beeping last night because it's batteries were low - weird, huh? Luckily, Ben could change it quickly with no help from me! I can picture you and your mom carrying that ladder though!
ReplyDeleteI've had the fire alarm issue myself. But mine wasn't as high and I hadn't just had surgery, so it was just a pain without the benefit of ironic humor.
ReplyDeleteOh Katie, the Lord has such a sense of humor! That happened to me a month or so ago. I could not sleep, so I went to one of the guest rooms and finally feel back asleep. Wouldn't you know the alarm started beeping the entire rest of the night. I got up, shut the door, and moved to the couch. Of course, Flint slept through everything. We have a sound soother/noise maker in our bedroom. Good for him! I always heard that the lord bepares you for motherhood...now I see what people mean.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are feeling better...I will keep praying for a full and speedy recovery!
Oh Katie! If only we had a video of that! I'm glad your mom was there to help!
ReplyDeleteI'm literally feeling your pain if the surgery recovery feels similar to a c-section!! I hope you feel better soon!
I hate it when that happens! Everytime the power goes out (and in Bella Vista, that is every time it storms), ours starts beeping in our room. Mikel SLEEPS THROUGH IT, until I kick him hard enough to get him out of bed to change it. The first time he tried that, he set them all off all over the house. Not fun!
ReplyDeleteOh my! That smoke alarm IS up really high! I'm curious~ who had to climb up that terribly tall ladder? That would be my worst nightmare! :)
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to hear that you are healing well, and have your mom there to help! :) I will continue to pray for you, though!
Thank you also for stopping by my blog, and, for taking the time to leave a comment! :)
OHHH Katie...so sorry to hear you are sick. I read SHannon's blog and read about it. 3 Er trips are 3 trips tooo many......I know the feeling. I hope you are on the mend....I have had our fire alarms do that too when the batteries are going...no fun. cherry
ReplyDeleteHI Katie...I'm in your MOPS group and I'm glad to hear you're recovering. I got a good chuckle at this story, b/c we too have had to replace a battery in the highest part of the house, in the middle of the night, praying that the noise would not wake Grady, and without a ladder! My husband used a ramp he uses to get his dirtbike in the truck. It was not pretty and could have gone bad at any moment! Thankfully, all was restored. Oh yeah, our chocolate lab goes into a terrible fit b/c of that noise and was shaking in our bed the rest of night! Isn't it nice to know that you're not the only one! :) We can laugh together. From reading all of your other comments, it looks like these things are DESIGNED to go off in the middle of the night! Ha!! :)Looking forward to MOPS next month.
